~Wolf Eye's~

Wolf Eye's
by Sarah Calvello

amber fire
hot embers in the breathing darkness
tranquil fighter
staring secretly
looking at something
we can't see

snow
falls on your great gray body
you shake it off
unconcerned
you stare
ears up
almond Egyption eyes
waiting
staring at something
we can't see

~Dress Rehearsal~

                                                             ~Dress Rehearsal~
    Everyday passes you by
day by day
too fast you can barely see
How many times did i wanna get out of here?
but i ended up coming back
the gravity was all i feared

I wont hang up my dreams in the closet
there's still a part of me that can  be
saved I believe
oh help me find the way
If it doesn't make you sing
it's time to find something that does
Life isn't a dress rehearsal

All the time you act like nothings going on
the skys the limit
but all  you  do is hold me down
And this shouldn't be oh not the way of things
when i can i will break free
its a done deal no looking back for me
I wont hang up my dreams in the closet
                                                               it lays there
                                                               too quiet and empty

~The Postcard~

by Sarah Calvello

                                          The Postcard
                                     for Michael Calvello

                                        take me to the fields

                                       of golden green

                                     where the flowers bloom heavy

                                    against the scented sky

                                     and trembling water

                                     the path of bent grass

leads to a group of quiet trees

                                    seeming alone

                                  even when they are together

                                  burnt green tears

                                  in the distance

                            it won't ever change

if you want it to stay the same

~French Bread and Chocolate~

                                                                                                  French Bread and Chocolate
  by Sarah Calvello

the mornings here are lazy
suburban hills touched
by the faintest traces of sun
and peach
like the golden edges of an old painting
misty fog hangs where the birds sing

I remember these mornings
with the velvety tongue
of chocolate spread
between fingers
licking spaces between clean
spreading iit on the open petals of french bread
just baked and soft
and smelling of home

there are even
golden-haired children
slowly emerging from their houses
sleep filled eyes and lazy laughter
the cross on the hill still sleeps in mist

~Coffee candies~

     coffee candies
in the lazy sun
I can't allow myself
to be happy now
bitter sweetness
slowly melts
on my tongue

sounds of playing and laughter
in the background
of my floating mind
the sun that dissolves mist

~Broken Paper~

“When you stop chasing the wrong things, you give the right things a chance
                                           to catch you.”— MJ Garcia

you have to let go
to see things in a different light
when you tell me to open my eyes
you try to fix me
you push towards the point of breaking

I just want someone to see me
to know the life I know
lay a whisper on my pillow and dream away
lonely silence
winter on the ground
love is nowhere to be found
where is the touch the time has run out
pretending were together
thats not enough anymore
feathers of broken paper
wind around the wind

~Candle haiku~

                                                      Candle
by Sarah Calvello

the shadows play with me
I can't hide or ignore your love
until then the candle burns

~Birds~

                                                                                                                    Birds

    by Sarah Calvello

everyday passes by too fast
and you can barely see
huddled within yourself
a folded winter flower
layers of tears slowly fall down

thick and cold with wear
you've missed so many birds
hold onto the good
and let go of the bad
like breathing
a liquid sigh trembles
in the drowsy shadows

~Cherries~

Cherries
                                by Sarah Calvello

sucking on cherry pits until there's no taste left

I want to tell you what you mean to me

                        I've been meaning too

                        I've been too busy

                        and now it's too late

my life is a coloring book

                       you've missed so many birds
I'm too young to grow up
cover me with thoughts of you
                         hold me close

                         and I'll hold you true

                         occasionally the fruit is bitter

an angel's fallen from the sky

cherry pits fall like echo's of glass

                        in the bowel

                          a shuddering

                           saffron sigh

~Colors~

Colors
by Sarah Calvello

all these colors
combed and spun
into fine spirals
of cotton candy
dying the sky
with a stretching sigh

morning rose
covers everything
with a patient brightness
another day
of rise and fall

~Untitled~

 by Sarah Calvello

     being wide awake
I don't see much of anything
fog rolls in like a dim promise
unthinkingly intricate
I am getting ready
to miss you again
I am getting ready to shiver again
the leaves fall from my tree again
the days are longer
and I am naked without being seen
saltwater falls
into my empty coffee cup

~Bent Angel~

Bent Angel

                                by Sarah Calvello

                             the bent figure

                             of a fairy girl
came to me in the box you sent

                            with its distant eyes

                            and delicate lily lines

one of the wings fell off

just laying there in the box

                           like the curved shell

                              of a tear

                              she is lost

and found at the same time

                           a secret smile

                             as she looks down

                              bent knee

                             she leans on open hands

~Winter Roses~

~Winter Roses
by Sarah Calvello

Winter Roses

the winter roses
floated outside our window
honey colored feathers
lazily turning curving upward
to what is left of the sun

we looked at them
as we had our coffee
in our blue china cups
wrapped in blankets
waking up slowly
wiping away the tears of sleep
slow secret smiles

the winter roses
lightly hang there like bells
curving bells as if held up by nothing
comfort and loneliness
honey and green watercolor
like a sigh
like a whisper
breathing a little more warmth into the coldness
sooner or later
I need a savior

~Wild Roses~

Wild Roses
by Sarah Calvellowild rose

jagged, delicate petals
billowing out or darkening green

this is a memory from my early childhood
when i think things made a little more sense
when life gets to be too much
I remember I used to dream

fantasies of endless summertime
golden leafs
with crystal-blue jewels
floating gently downstream
a time when pain was too small too mention
and cold wasn't understood

~Unsayable~

                                 ~Unsayable~
                                  by Sarah Calvello

  the moon hung

like a curve of a tear

                            in the soundless mirror

                           of the sky

no clouds to hide its way

                           this is something unsay able

                            this moment

                            this saved-up coin of happiness

i take it while I can

                             a blank page

                            our footprints write on

~The Lullaby~

The Lullaby-by Sarah Calvello

                        I lay awake at night

listening to the lullaby of the crickets
                        soft underwater whispers

                        mixing into the night

                        this is the only time

                        I get to not think

                        worries blend into the shadows

I wrap myself in th e trembling blankets
                        of forgetfulness

                        the space between dreams

                        everything seems right

                        in those soft dark moments
                        alone with crickets

                        the night is deafening

                        when the silence is listening

~Silken~

Silken
by Sarah Calvello

hurry, hold me
fold me into the corners of the night
before I blow away
you're inprinting yourself
a map on my fragile heart

this tentative start
shivering skin
holding each other so close
not wanting to let go
but afraid
of the things there are to miss

a part of you
just wants to keep the innocence
afraid to believe again
you don't seem quite real
the silken touch of my lotion
predicting motion
~Child's poem 2~

~Penny~

tossing pennies in the bucket
clip clop clip
braided red strawberry bucket
with coins in it

collect all the coins
save them all
save them all
watch them fall
just make sure your pocket has no holes in it
~This is my first attempt at a child's poem, what do you think?~

~Lantern~
           by Sarah Calvello

what you do says who you are
people should be real and true
like flowers are

rings of gold
like friendship and love
shouldn't be broken
good memories and smiles
shouldn't fly like the wings of a dove

as you lay me down to sleep
I pray my love you will keep
throughout the in's and out's of life
keep the lantern burning bright

~Bright street~

Bright Street~
by Sarah Calvello
we drove past
the castle house
everyday
the windows bared
with white lined icing
the dark gray torrents
winding around each other
in a hug
gray and luminous
like a shadow
it comes out of the grassy hill
a white fence lines
the whole house
trying to outlast
the scared brick
someday I will get a house like that
someday
I'll find my own torrent
you just grin
say I cant even afford the toliet paper
the papery corners of your lined Italian mouth going up
like a cat yawning
sly breathing

I tell you someday
every time I pass that house on Bright street
the one with the curvy gray torrents
I think of you

at the corner it say's the end
it is marked
you've finally come to the end
of your fantastical Bright street

~Autunm~

Autumn
by Sarah Calvello

The air smells like apples
what a surprise
the crisp air is warm and hazy
dream air
the kind where you don't really know
where you are

golden Autumn leaves papered
the long sidewalk
with all people walking by
barely noticing
secret footsteps
the change
the hum in the air
summer is  over

The best way to see tomorrow is to go to bed tonight
its so hard to say goodbye
to yesterday

~Sunset~

~I wrote this for  my dad when he passed, what do you think?~

Sunset
by Sarah Calvello

mine is an army of angels
night brings out troubles to the light
hanging on the smoky edge of dreams
hazy silvers hide the light
hidden clouds and trees like dark tears
starts with a glimmer
ending with a glow
It's so hard to forget pain
but it's even harder to remember sweetness

~How to Train Yourself to Start Writing~

~This is a pretty useful article on how to train yourself to write;  essentially the main point of my blog. My blog is on poetry, but it is nothing if you don't know how to write. The first step is to get into the right frame of mind to start writing and focus; sit there and do nothing else until an idea comes. Don't multitask, like everybody does these days. Step two is to calm your mind and think of nothing; there's discribe how to do it. Next is the first sentence sprint; you're almost ready to write and don't forget to start your stopwatch. Then, remember paper is your friend and you brainstorm. Then you can write. This makes me realize that we forgot that writing is easy if we just keep practicing it without fear of naysayers.~
