Rust and Stardust

“For poems are like rainbows; they escape you quickly.”
—Langston Hughes, The Big Sea

It was a night
when the moon
looked sad
naked
a perfect
faded orb
nestled
in the faded
charcoal
night

the rainbow
blanket
of clouds
scattered
wispy webs
some beauty
lulling
quietly
in the disarray
of everyday
to make you smile

forgetting
your
sadness
for a moment
showing you
what you’ve
missed
longing
for a
phantom
feeling

wishing
I had more time
with you
and the rest
is rust
and stardust

I remember
you telling me
you don’t have to live
forever
you just have to live

the stony house
you wanted
with the lonely
torrets

where
the street
had no name
except for bright

you were
always
looking
for the light
inside

we were
never mistaken
in the silence
