~Ode to Kamalanie~

Ode to Kamalanie
by Sarah Mahina Calvello

the sky was shaking
when they took you away
the wind was screaming
and swirling
chasing the leaves

wanting to play
wanting to go up the stairs
stubbornly
to see us
no matter what we said

it was you time
Kamalanie
I want you to know your on my mind
I love you all the time
you can bark at me
anytime

I'll never forget
your amber eyes
your breath on my skin
burnt coffee fur
tangled and white
with memories

I keep thinking
I hear your soft footsteps on the stairs
your nails tickling the wood
in that familiar echo
that sounds like home

~Oranges in Spanish~translated by Lennin Millan

por Sarah Mahina Calvello

Naranjas

~Stars~translated by Lenin Millan

   exige a sentirse
   Quiero sentir finalmente
   el momento
   finalmente abrir los ojos
   ver el ascenso y caída
   de todos los días

   así degustar las estrellas
   conmigo

   recuerdos

~Stars~

"When he tried change for the first time, he said come quick, I've tasted the stars. Ya, I think were gonna need more of this. Coming up, we've bottled all the stars for you."~The Fault in Our Stars

thats the thing about pain
it demands to be felt
I want to finally feel
the moment
finally open my eyes
see the rise and fall
of all the days

so taste the stars
with me
feel the velvety brightness
honey-thick
on your tongue
close your eyes
and try not not to care
for as long as you can

if you want the rainbow
you have to deal with the rain
the good and bad times
the spread out sun on a pavement
and a cup of tea
is all I need this time
the stars
are our ugly and beautiful
memories

~Stars~

Star
by Sarah Mahina Calvello

"You-you alone will have the stars as no one else has them. In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them, I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night....You-only you-will have stars that can laugh-Antoine De-Saint-Exupery

reaching what you reach for
is hard
but trying is not that hard
 somehow we'll get there
even if we take the long way around

at night
you took me outside
opened the door with a grin
a rare light in your eyes
you pointed a leathery finger up
until I saw it
my first shooting star

it slowly climbed the arc of the night sky
shaking and white
leaving echo's of memories behind
cold slow swirls
in the still dark

thats my childhood
thats what it comes down to
a shooting star
brief in the night sky

I'll keep looking up
so I can see your star

I saw a shooting star tonight
    and I thought of you

~Hummingbird Rain~

Hummingbird Rain
by Sarah Mahina Calvello

the smell and the feel of the warm may grass
that is what is on my mind
like warm flowery fruit
vanilla coffee and a friend
the pale sun strong
through the paintbrush trees
shadows on the ground like a open fan

startling after a heavy rain
I turn to see a green hummingbird
small body darting through the wet leaves and flowers
folding and dipping
with an invisible wind
like a small shuddering sigh

these are the good moments,
the ones that matter,
the moments that keep me from falling apart
you can dip
don't worry about the fall
